The pepper is much more of a bitter English one as a pose to the sweeter Indian. Salt is a good amount, but from these you mostly get pepper, a lot of pepper.
Still a good crunchy crisp, but maybe a bit too extreme for most.

So these ones are quite heavy on the pepper. Some people like this, some people don't. Today i'm liking it, but it definitely has a kick to it that stays in your mouth for a good while. So, first flavour from Boxer Chips, is the classic ready salted. Only these are labelled as 'Savagely Salted, but not indecently so' and that's a correct statement. They are well salted but not in a overly bad way. The first obvious difference in these crisps are the packaging. You open the pack to reveal a cardboard box, which then folds out and opens up to what you see above.. good for sharing! Quite an interesting take on crisp packaging that I think works very well. The crisp is very thin and curly, which might give the perception of a vegetable crisp, but these are most definitely potato. They have managed to keep the crisp very thin but still have a really massive crunch (without being oily.) Very impressive to start to this range. 7/10 (remember this is very high for a classic flavour) I've roped in a Guinness lover (Dom) for this review, as I feel that a review will differ depending on your love or hate for Guinness. Guinness lover: These crisps are not 'Extra Smooth' - they're delightfully crispy. The distinct burnt flavour is more typical of Guiness Extra Stout than it's widgeted counterpart. I look forward to enjoying these formidable savoury snacks over the cold months ahead in their natural habitat of olde english pubs. Their stylishly veiled black visage draped over an english oak table. Full on flavour, for the Guinness lover 8/10. Guinness hater: I'm having moments of confused liking and moments of extreme disgust here. A few over seasoned crisps taste to me like i've stuck my tongue up a chimney, but the rest are not too bad.. i'm pretty surprised, as a Guinness hater to be munching my way through this pack. I think they're a bit like Marmite, you either love them or you hate them... the thing is I can't decide which one is me. I hate marmite and I love twiglets like I love air. At some points I hate this flavour and at other points it gives you something similar to a dulled down twiglet. For me it's 3/10. mmm, vinegar definitely has a cider taste to it... sweet sweet apple. Think i'd quite like to give Burrow Hill cider a try - i'm impressed by this. Not over salted, cider isn't too overpowering.. slightly curled crisps with a good crunch to them. 7/10 That concludes my reviews of Pipers crisps, all together a pretty impressive range.. and those spicy tomato mmmmmm!!! I've got to get more some more of them! All of the range had a good crunch, but weren't oily at all. The flavours were rich and the packaging is nice. The flavours have a nice little story to them and I look forward to seeing what new flavours they have to come! J (Why) (Why) WHY? Can't say this enough times, unflavoured crisps are pointless. At least with Pipers it doesn't just reek of the oil it's cooked in, you can actually get the potato from it.. but it's a really dull, bland flavour. I could that maybe if you had a dip with extreme flavour (sweet chilli?) that you might use these to dip.. that's as far as I can see. 2/10 Holy Moly, this is one FINE crisp! What a flavour. It's like a sweet walkers heinz ketchup flavour, ramped up a few notches, with some deep & intense spices. The crisp gives great crunch, the oil level is good and the amount of seasoning is overdone - which in some cases means it's too much.. in this case you just want more and more and more and more and more. This is one of those hall of fame crisps that will go down in Crisp Nation history. 9.6/10 mmmm! These are goodens... Its not the spicy british pepper we know, this indian pepper has a strangely sweet taste to it. Really interesting flavour that I wasn't expecting. Pipers' crunch is perfect. The potato is good. This is definitely a lick your fingers type flavour, which is rare for black pepper crisps as they're normally overly flavoured and overly spicy. My favourite black pepper so far. 8/10 Strange that sweet chilli has become one of the classic standard flavours for a UK crisp company to make nowadays. I'm not complaining, sweet chilli is a damn good flavour. This sweet chilli however, despite being bright red from being covered in flavourings is pretty bland. Not too spicy, not too sweet, not too impressive. I get hints of what could be a great sweet chilli crisp, but I think they can do better. 4/10 |
