Around the World

The odd, amazing and INSANE crisps I've discovered from around the world...

Doritos - Dinamita, Chile Limon

WARNING: These crisps actually made my mouth bleed.

Granted I was eating them a little hastily on a late night binge, but they're pretty solid long crisps that don't completely fit in your mouth, so watch out for the tearing of gums when stuffing these :S

It was actually hard to tell what is blood and what is flavouring, becuase these are the most toxic looking crisps I have EVER come across.

They are luminous red and stained my hands for 24 hours (and I SCRUBBED!) so that can't be good for you...

Saying all this, the actual crisp is good, it's doritos but with a realt hick crunch, rolled up like taco rolls but definitely harder.

The flavour is as intense as the colour. the chilli hits you hard as does the sour lime. If you were feeling a little ill or wanted to wake up.. these things would give you a serious kick!

I've just noticed that my whole keyboard has turned red.

For full on hard hitting chilli (not too much tears mind) with a strong taste of lime and enough colouring to paint the world, try these!

Hummus Chips - Roasted Red Pepper

mmmm! These crisps are garlicky goodness!

These 'chips' came from our good friend Dustin at chipreview.com, US.

We now have some Hummus crisps here in the UK (can be found in most health/organic shops) see here. They didn't do too badly, as chick peas seem to be an excellent choice for crisps. I just wish they were more Hummus tasting.

These American ones do! Well, they taste more like a over garlickified (that's right I made up a word and i'm sticking to it) Hummus. Mixed in with sweet roasted red peppers, it's a good combination that sits well with me. The shape of them are like big pasta shells and they have a good crunch.

These aren't going to give a nice fresh breath but they sure are tasty. Salt levels seem to be reasonably low and the flavour feels natural and not over the top.

Garlic lovers rejoice.

Simba - Ghost Pops Original

Well i've been waiting to get my hands on these babies for a long time now. But did they live up to the expectations? Read on fearless fans...

All the way from Cape Town, my good friend Greg has been banging on about Ghost pops for years, but every time he returns home and buys me a pack - they've disappeared from his suitcase as if by magic? Sounds pretty ghostly to me...

These are a Saffa classic that all South Africans will know from their childhood.

They are very monster munch like, so I do feel a little bit of nostalgia attached to them all the same. The texture is very monster munch like, a crisp outer layer with a softer crunch as you go through the crisp, they're thicker than monster munch so takes a little longer for those gnashers to get through. The flavour is the epitome of TANGY.
They're very tomato-ey in a very similar way to tangy toms, but have a fullsome spice underlay - which is subtle but warming. The tomato has a slightly bbq edge to it, and is a really complete flavour that can only be compared closely to tangy toms, but tangy toms are sweeter. I have to hand it to him, they are a good crisp. The packaging is old skool, the bag is big, the name is great and the flavour moreish.

Either buy a ticket to South Africa, or go to the south african shop in Liverpool Street, your choice.

Woolworths - Prawn Cocktail

What's that? WOOLWORTHS I hear you shout?

Yes, these came all the way from Cape Town, where Woolworths not only still exists, but is a really posh shop like Marks and Sparks or Waitrose!

Weird...

Still, it's pretty obvious what these are - a Skips knockoff. But they taste a little different.

They have exactly the same texture as skips, that melts in your mouth, but the flavour is well.. more fishy. Not that the ingredients include actual seafood but I think the difference between these and skips are that they are a lot less sweet and have a lot more soy sauce. Salt is still pretty high and they have a tang to them, but they are a lot more savoury and don't come close to the Classic sweet Skips flavour.

Doritos - Tapatio

So I wanted something a little spicy to try and warm me up because of the bloody horrible british weather... I got that and a little more here!

These were sent across the see from our good friends chipreview along with plenty of other amazing American treats which I will be sharing with you in the coming weeks.

These are from America, but pretty obviously made for the Mexicans, all the writing on the back is Spanish, but they're still made in Texas.

Tapatio is a pretty intense hot sauce, it's warmed my cockles to say the least. It's pretty similar to tabasco. To start off with you get some great flavours which i've come to love from Doritos. Then comes the burn, about 30 seconds later. The blood is rushing to my head but it feels grrrreat. I still have my taste buds, so it's a good burn (for someone who likes their spice).

Pop Chips - Sweet Potato

Pop chips - sweet potato

Another pop chips flavour, these were found in New York.

Potato has been swapped with the orange sweet potato variety.

Still has the same popped crunch that I love. Obviously it's a lot sweeter, but it's nicely topped off with a good amount of salt. Unfortunately still a bit too sweet for me to be finishing the pack.

Cape Cod - Sweet Mesquite Barbeque

Cape Cod - Sweet Mesquite Barbeque.
Found in Boston.

These crisps are BRIGHT orange all over so putting them in your mouth, you'd think that they would be over flavoured to insanity...

In reality they are incredibly subtle, a slight BBQ tinge and a little sweetness but not much lasting flavour.

The crisp is good with a solid crunch, not too oily.

It's a pretty natural tasting crisp, even though the looks are deceiving.

Personally I prefer a crisp with a bit more balls/ flavour.
