Around the World

The odd, amazing and INSANE crisps I've discovered from around the world...

Lorenz Monster Munch - Pizza

Another 'found in Luxembourg' but originally from Germany. Another from the confusingly named Monster Munch range (maybe only for us Brits). Texture and crunch quite clearly Pom Bear, except in the form of smiley little ghosts. Pizza flavouring not overly sickly, definitely a sweet tomato in the mix, a bit smokey, and a hit of parsley and onion. I definitely preferred the tomato ketchup version of these, and for that reason...

Lorenz - Curly Barbecue style

Lorenz Curly Barbecue style

Now, this is a different take on my favourite crisp, the Erdnus Flip, of peanut fame. Found in Luxembourg, eaten in Germany. In the Erdnus homeland Germany.

The sweet, and I wouldn't say spicy flavour, is just caked on top of the awesome peanut. I guess what I'm saying here, is that I wish they were just originals. If they were to create a different flavour, it shouldn't be spliced wig the peanut.

I'll stick to original thanks.

Wowee is this a good time to be alive or what?!!

Not only have I discovered that my local newsagents in Stamford Hill sell my favourite crisps of all time - erdnuss flips (peanut butter wotsits) but they also stock a variation!!!

Yes that's right - peanutty wotsits with mexican vibezzzzzzz. Peanutty amazingness with a sharp tangy salsa. Kinda good, kinda strange.

But mostly good. If you see erdnuss flips on the shelf - shove them in your face, if you've overdosed - mix it up with a bit of chilli - then hit the peanut again and hard. It's a recipe for success.

*please note that although they were found in London - these are German.

Edeka - Cheese Kaseballchen

Pretty cheap cheese balls from big german supermarket chain Edeka.

Lives up to its name in the cheap department, although tesco's cheese balls are pretty damn good... these are not so much!

They have the crunch right, but there's something pretty chemically about the flavour (not that tesco's ones are that far removed but this makes you feel that there's something pretty wrong about them.)

Found in Berlin.

Ketchup and Mayo flavoured crisps.

Wow. Flavours don't get much more trashy than this!

These ACTUALLY taste like 2am on a friday night to me.  When you drunkenly order a Junior Spesh with chips, and load it up with ketchup and mayo. I'm completely shocked that they've been able to recreate this in a crisp. The crunch is perfect, the salt levels perfect and it just is exactly what it set out to be.. ketchup mixed with mayonnaise.

Very impressed.

Crunchies - American Cream

Found in Berlin.

American Cream (Honey & Mustard) flavour.

Good crunch as expected from Lorenz but the potato is really thin, could do with doubling in thickness.

It's tasty, I like the mixture of honey & mustard together, but in this case there's way too much honey, it's too sweet.

Take down the honey levels and you've got a good crisp, for now it's 6/10

ACHTUNG! EXTREM SCHARF FUR KINDER NICHT GEEIGNET!

Which reads as...
ATTENTION! EXTREMELY SEVERE!
NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN

These are obviously from Germany, and what a good warning to have. Luckily they're not the strength of DEATH RAIN which brings a tear to my eye to this day.

But they do pack a worthwhile punch. But it's a manageable punch, like one from your big brother that you pretend doesn't hurt but kind of does and at the same time, it's not a dead arm or bruise situation so it's not time to tell mum.

I've cleared this whole pack in 5 minutes.
The sticks give good crunch, they're a spicy paprika flavour with a slight underlying sweetness, but not enough to take the edge off the spice, which is nice, if you like spice.

Lorenz Crunchies - African Style

Love what Lorenz have done here... made a flavour to represent a whole continent!

Got these from Bavaria.

So apparently this is the taste of africa, well they're pretty good. In the ingredients are coriander, garlic, turmeric, onion powder, fennel and spices...

To my tongue it tastes like a sweet curry pot noodle mixed with worcester sauce. Which is pretty interesting but in this case tasty. Lorenz make good quality potato crisps so the crunch is strong and the flavouring is spread nicely.

For a sweet curry flavour, it's done the job.

These were bought in Qatar, but are of course German.

Maybe a little confusing for us brits that they are called monster munch! I guess that's why they are not in sale in the UK. Shame, as they're pretty good.

The texture is exactly the same as Pom-bear (another crisp originating from Germany.)

Shaped like more a ghost than a monster in my eyes (no?) Flavouring is good and ketchuppy, Nice and sweet, not overly seasoned. Definitely a fair amount of sugar in these.

Erdnussflips - Classic

Whenever I tell people about crisp nation, the first thing they ask me is 'What is your favourite crisp?'

Which in the UK could mean a variety depending on how i'm feeling.. Wheat Crunchies Crispy Bacon.. Doritos Chilli Heatwave... Monster Munch Flamin Hot (when they were first brought out and had some punch) Red Sky Cream Cheese & Bacon.. the list goes on...

But i'm talking from the 'around the world' section here... and these babies are probably the only crisp that will get a 10 on this site. They are the holy grail of the crisp world.

I get them imported in from Germany on a regular basis. There's a company called Ellert who do something similar (available in tescos) but they're overpriced and really not up the standard of Erdnussflips as they are a little dry.

Erdnussflips are not the crisp of a healthy person, they are fatty trashy and come in massive packs - that even if you're on your own you will finish within 20 minutes.

They are basically peanut flavoured wotsits. Except that the crunch is more than in wotsits, but they are the same size and shape. They are covered in oily peanutty goodness and are the most addictive snacks i've ever set my eyes upon.

If you ever get the chance to be in Germany - look out for these bad boys and you will never regret it.
