Around the World

The odd, amazing and INSANE crisps I've discovered from around the world...

Meiji - Matcha (Green Tea)

Picture
Country of Origin: Japan

Flavour: Green Tea

Outcome: Vomit

These don't quite qualify as a crisp. They're puffed corn covered in milk powder, colouring and  green tea. Anyone who looks at these and thinks 'mmm they look appetising!' has got issues.

Serious crisp issues.

Just the smell of them makes me feel so sick.

WRONG WRONG WRONG.

Ozack - Kinoko Batta (Buttered Mushroom)

Another packet of crisps from Japan let's me down.

The actual crisp is quite different, it's like a popped potato crisp. A cross between a normal crisp and a pop chip. Which is void of oil and could make a really good crisp.

But the butter tastes more like dirty, stodgy margarine rather than something you'd happily paste over your corn on the cob.

They're a pretty sickly crisp, and i'll admit that i'm not a mushroom lover, but even for a mushroom lover this is not what you'd want from a mushroom crisp. The butter flavouring feels like it's clogging up my lungs.

Japan, you crazy.

Frito Lay - Fermented Squid

These came from Japan via Hong Kong.

No surprises here, if I utter the words 'fermented squid' to anyone within hearing distance, the look of disgust is evident.

The crisp is actually pretty good, they're basically Nik-Naks. Salty, fishy, fermented Nik-Naks.

I love that on the back it says 'may contain traces of egg and crab. There's something super wrong about these. I've eaten three crisps and that is enough for me. Completely un-edible nastiness.

Still for the novelty value of saying that you've eaten fermented squid crisps it's a wapping 1/10

Another Japanese edition from Crispmas..

Oh Asia, why are you so fishy? Not sure that this actually has any fish in it, but it tastes like fish oil to me.. The crisp has a good potato crunch but it's not making up for anything.

Can't eat more than two of these without feeling pretty sick. In fact i've had to wash my mouth out. ewwwww.

Crusti Croc - Inferno Sticks

ACHTUNG! EXTREM SCHARF FUR KINDER NICHT GEEIGNET!

Which reads as...
ATTENTION! EXTREMELY SEVERE!
NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN

These are obviously from Germany, and what a good warning to have. Luckily they're not the strength of DEATH RAIN which brings a tear to my eye to this day.

But they do pack a worthwhile punch. But it's a manageable punch, like one from your big brother that you pretend doesn't hurt but kind of does and at the same time, it's not a dead arm or bruise situation so it's not time to tell mum.

I've cleared this whole pack in 5 minutes.
The sticks give good crunch, they're a spicy paprika flavour with a slight underlying sweetness, but not enough to take the edge off the spice, which is nice, if you like spice.

Lorenz Crunchies - African Style

Love what Lorenz have done here... made a flavour to represent a whole continent!

Got these from Bavaria.

So apparently this is the taste of africa, well they're pretty good. In the ingredients are coriander, garlic, turmeric, onion powder, fennel and spices...

To my tongue it tastes like a sweet curry pot noodle mixed with worcester sauce. Which is pretty interesting but in this case tasty. Lorenz make good quality potato crisps so the crunch is strong and the flavouring is spread nicely.

For a sweet curry flavour, it's done the job.

Red Rock Deli - Honey Soy Chicken

Another Crispmas addition from Australia.

First off the crisp is good, a crunch and oil content on par with walkers but with a bit more skin.

The flavour put me off to begin with, having not been a fan of all the asian crisps that are full of soy, so it's automatically the first thing I could taste. Then the honey came through, some really nice deep sweet honey goodness. Not much salt in these ones, so it's a pretty sweet crisp. The Chicken is pretty much hidden by the other flavours.

I still couldn't get over the soy, but now i'm 10 crisps in and I can't stop attacking them. The taste of soy has completely left my palette. Just the addictive sweet honey goodness that's left. I can't put them down.

First impression 4/10, 10 crisps in 8/10

Lorenz Monster Munch - Ketchup

These were bought in Qatar, but are of course German.

Maybe a little confusing for us brits that they are called monster munch! I guess that's why they are not in sale in the UK. Shame, as they're pretty good.

The texture is exactly the same as Pom-bear (another crisp originating from Germany.)

Shaped like more a ghost than a monster in my eyes (no?) Flavouring is good and ketchuppy, Nice and sweet, not overly seasoned. Definitely a fair amount of sugar in these.

Calbee - Nori Shiyo (Seaweed & Soy Sauce)

All the way from Tokyo, Calbee's Nori Shiyo flavour (Seaweed & Soy Sauce flavour.)

Not actually too bad a crisp from Calbee here, not overly fishy (as most oriental crisps tend to be) and a normal potato crisp (so many seem to be puffed nothingness or rice crackers)

The seaweed has a nice obvious sprinkle of seaweed on it. Looks like the same stuff that sushi gets wrapped in (well the same dark green colour.)

The right amount of salt too.. a welcome addition to Crispmas.

Smiths - Burger Rings

Another Aussie invention this one.. Burger flavoured onion rings!

Quite like these, but i'd say they were less burgery unless there's a lot of pickle in the burger. They've got quite a pickled vinegar taste to them.

These are trashy crisps without a doubt. The crisps are bright orange and the flavour is full on. But sometimes you need that. The actual crisp has a good onion rings crunch. Think i'd feel a little sick if i'd finished the whole pack on my own, luckily they were quite popular with my Crispmas attendees.
