Calbee Dark Chocolate Crisps

This Japanese creation shouldn’t work.

A salty, crunchy ridged crisp ~ a perfectly decent plain and savoury specimen. Honest. Reliable.

But wait! They’ve Jackson Pollock-ed these salty slivers with splatters of decadently dark chocolate! And, that sounds wrong, right? But these were delicious.

Do you like sweet AND salty popcorn? Salted caramel? Salt flakes on your chocolate cookies? Then step right up.

I polished off the pack in that confusing late afternoon lull when you’re not sure if you want dinner or biscuits, chocolate buttons or carrot sticks, another cup of tea or cheese and crackers... but you know you want SOMETHING. Enter the perfect solution. Chocolate crisps.

Bravo Calbee. 8/10

Calbee - Super Sour Ponzu Vinegar

Another new flavour from Japan.

This time it's their 'Ponzu Vinegar' which is basically a vinegar that's drenched in citrus and normally mixed with soy sauce.

The outcome of the crisp flavour is a lemony, vinegary, soy saucy crisp.

It's a bit weird. The crisp is quite light and thin, without skin, but has an ok crunch, the lemon sticks out as does the soy. They've been well salted too.

Not an instant favourite by any means.

Amayoshi - Wasabeef

Damn Japan did good!

For those who will dismiss Wasabi for the fear of it burning your nostrils off, I can understand why you haven't tasted Wasabi.. but you're missing out on a truly awesome flavour.

These crisps make Wasabi accessible. The flavour of Wasabi is great, and not hot in this instance. You get to taste the flavour of Wasabi without the pain.

Also the beef is pretty good and beefy on these too. The crisp is nice and crunchy, if maybe a little skinny.

I wish I had more to gobble down, hopefully another trip to Japan will be on the cards this year!

'We always produce WASABEEF for all customer's smiles' I love asian translation.

Koikeya - Super Sour Plum

Another Curiosity from Japan.

They call it Super Sour Plum flavour. In fact that is exactly what it is, they have perfected the flavouring and it is exactly like a sour plum, whether you want that in a crisp is a different matter.

When you first put them to your tongue, you could be forgiven for thinking that they were prawn cocktail, as they can have a cherry tomato tang to begin. Then the sourness hits you and you realise how plummy they really are. Surprisingly they don't smell of anything. The actual crisp is good, nice thickness with a good amount of crunch and the right amount of oil. Only thing is that the flavouring makes them look pink. (is that a good thing?)

I think if you're a fan of prawn cocktail (and I know a lot of people aren't) then I think you'll like these. They are an extreme variation but not disgustingly so.

Frito Lays - Blue Cheese

When the japs go for a flavour, they really go full on no holds barred.

Frito Lays' Blue Cheese is no exception. These are extremely flavoursome blue cheese flavoured ink-naks.

Unlike the dreaded fermented squid version, I actually like these. They are edible.

In fact I might be able to finish the pack. My breath will suffer but my taste buds won't. Now that's an achievement for Asian crisps. Even if they are just creating a very english flavour.

The cheese isn't over sour as some blue cheese can be, they've injected the right amount of creaminess and tanginess from the cheese and the right amount of salt. The crisp is good quality corn, exactly the same as nik-naks.

Meiji - Matcha (Green Tea)

Country of Origin: Japan

Flavour: Green Tea

Outcome: Vomit

These don't quite qualify as a crisp. They're puffed corn covered in milk powder, colouring and  green tea. Anyone who looks at these and thinks 'mmm they look appetising!' has got issues.

Serious crisp issues.

Just the smell of them makes me feel so sick.

WRONG WRONG WRONG.

Ozack - Kinoko Batta (Buttered Mushroom)

Another packet of crisps from Japan let's me down.

The actual crisp is quite different, it's like a popped potato crisp. A cross between a normal crisp and a pop chip. Which is void of oil and could make a really good crisp.

But the butter tastes more like dirty, stodgy margarine rather than something you'd happily paste over your corn on the cob.

They're a pretty sickly crisp, and i'll admit that i'm not a mushroom lover, but even for a mushroom lover this is not what you'd want from a mushroom crisp. The butter flavouring feels like it's clogging up my lungs.

Japan, you crazy.

Frito Lay - Fermented Squid

These came from Japan via Hong Kong.

No surprises here, if I utter the words 'fermented squid' to anyone within hearing distance, the look of disgust is evident.

The crisp is actually pretty good, they're basically Nik-Naks. Salty, fishy, fermented Nik-Naks.

I love that on the back it says 'may contain traces of egg and crab. There's something super wrong about these. I've eaten three crisps and that is enough for me. Completely un-edible nastiness.

Still for the novelty value of saying that you've eaten fermented squid crisps it's a wapping 1/10

Calbee - Salt & Sesame Oil

Another Japanese edition from Crispmas..

Oh Asia, why are you so fishy? Not sure that this actually has any fish in it, but it tastes like fish oil to me.. The crisp has a good potato crunch but it's not making up for anything.

Can't eat more than two of these without feeling pretty sick. In fact i've had to wash my mouth out. ewwwww.

Calbee - Nori Shiyo (Seaweed & Soy Sauce)

All the way from Tokyo, Calbee's Nori Shiyo flavour (Seaweed & Soy Sauce flavour.)

Not actually too bad a crisp from Calbee here, not overly fishy (as most oriental crisps tend to be) and a normal potato crisp (so many seem to be puffed nothingness or rice crackers)

The seaweed has a nice obvious sprinkle of seaweed on it. Looks like the same stuff that sushi gets wrapped in (well the same dark green colour.)

The right amount of salt too.. a welcome addition to Crispmas.
