Chicharrón - Americano Jacks

These were found in Cartagena, Colombia.

Seeing 'Americano Jacks' I got into my mind that these would be monterey jack cheese flavoured crisps.. boy was I dissapointed!

It's the 'Natural' at the bottom that I should have been looking at. These crisps are completely flavourless. Not even salt. Just puffed nothingness. A cheap puffed wheat crisp that would go stale if left out for 30 seconds.

Boy, how wrong you are. These are not 'puffed wheat' crisps at all. If you read at the back of the bag you'll see the ingredients: 'piel de cerdo, aceite vegetal y sal'. Which translates into: 'pork skin, vegetable oil and salt'.
Yes, they are made of pork skin! A Colombian friend brought me a packet from Colombia because I was absolutely surprised when she told me about these snacks. (I'm from Argentina BTW, and you don't see snacks made of animal skins over here.)

No way!!! Pork skin eh... shame it didn't actually taste like pork skin- that might have been nice! ;)
