Fairfields farm - Sea Salt & Tomato Salsa (Heat & Eat)

Holy Moly!! Fairfields farm have really blown my mind here.

A complete game-changer in the crisp world... hot crisps!
I can't actually believe it's not been done before.. and it just makes SO MUCH SENSE. I'm a crisp lover but sometimes it's just so cold and you want something to warm you up.. well here is the answer.

Sure they're your standard salted crisps, but warmed up in the microwave they become something totally different. Something I always wished would be a thing. I love chips - but I love the crispy crunchy ones that are so rare - well here they are. The tomato salsa dip is the perfect addition for sweet tomatoey goodness  but with a lil chili kick that really hits home on the 'keep me warm' treat.
A word of warning - don't overdo them as they'll end up like microwave popcorn does.. 20-30 seconds and they're the best winter warmer snack we've had in years.

Ten Acre - The Day Sweet & Sour Became Friends

Next up in the Ten Acre range and it's a flavour that could easily have been associated with a pretty trashy brand... A lovely cheap chinese sweet & sour sauce is definitely not the classiest of images and I wouldn't put it past someone like pot noodle to be championing a flavour like this.

All that said, I do love my sweet and sour balls and I have high hopes for that flavour but imagined it would be so intense and impossible to finish.

I really am so impressed, the flavour is perfect but not greasy and totally moreish. These are pretty darn good. Sure they're sweet - but in a sickly way.

Pringles - Pigs In Blankets

It's beginning to look a lot like... seasonal editions! What a time to be alive!

Yes it's that time of year where crisp companies are fighting for shelf space to be crowned king of the christmas party snack table.

And I have to say that although pigs in blankets have been done before and although pringles more extreme flavours have been pretty sickly - these are pretty darn good. I'm seriously impressed!

Straight away you can tell - they're definitely not going to be veggie friendly.. They're just way too porky!

The flavour has bacon down... smoky, salty and moreish. Exactly what i'd expect from a crisp re-enactment of my favourite part of the christmas meal.

Top dollar.

Ten Acre - When Hickory Got BBQ'd

Next up in the Ten Acre range - we have a hickory smoked BBQ.

BBQ is a flavour that so many crisp makers have got wrong time and time again by making them too sweet which in turn can make them quick sickly.

Ten Acre have gone for a much more smokey a flavour here, which have a nice deep paprika/cayenne pepper hit to it, not spicy but warming and intense. There is a subtle sweetness to it as you'd expect from BBQ but not overdone. Again the crunch level is great, they're not greasy and the flavouring is even.

A really great full on BBQ flavour. SO IMPRESSED. So is my little Buddy apparently - he can't keep his eye off them!

Monster Munch - Sizzling Bacon

It's a special day in the Crisp Nation - as we introduce our new reviewer Stevo! He's gone old skool with his first review, dating back to the 80's with a review from nostalgia land...

Back in the 1980s, my school lunchbox was dominated by all the healthy things kids need to grow up; y’know, limp cheese and marmite sandwiches, a different chocolate biscuit everyday (Trio or Club anyone?) and invariably a packet of maize or corn snacks.

I’ve always been a sucker for vinegary flavours be it Salt and said Vinegar or Pickled Onion, with Monster Munch arguably the daddy of that flavour (although never rule out Space Raiders), but being the carnivore I am, meaty flavours do have their appeal and no meat flavour is better in my opinion than that of bacon. One of the finest examples of its time were the Sizzling Bacon Flavour Hunks of Monster Munch by Smith’s. Always offering a dilemma of a choice between them and the Pickled Onion variety, they never let me down and for some reason combined well with the post-swim smell of chlorine – or maybe that’s just nostalgia kicking in! Either way, when Walkers took over the brand and dispensed with Smokey Bacon (which is what I recall the flavour being named) it was a sad day in the history of crisps. Surpassed in the bacon stakes only by another of Smith’s bygone range, the Football Crazy, bacon Monster Munch truly were joy to eat.

Phileas Fogg - Indonesian Style Crackers Aromatic Spices & Sweet Chilli

Well these new crisps from Fogg are certainly full of flavour!! Really intense spices and herbs with a nice warming chilli aftertaste. Really like the crackers themselves, like a nice fresh prawn cracker should be, hate it when they're stale. Great crunch but they feel light. It's the flavour that shines here, look at the list of ingredients...
Coriander, onion, ginger, lemon, lemongrass, red peppers, garlic, leek, red chilli pepper amongst many spices.

Moresome and Awesome.

Mackie's - Scotch Bonnet

8/4/2013

Scotch Bonnet is supposed to be the infamously spicy Scottish Chilli pepper, so these should hurt a bit.

Luckily they don't, but the flavour they've got here is pretty unique. Sure there's Chilli there, but there's a lot more to it, and being insanely spicy obviously wasn't the main objective for them. Sure there's a little burn a few minutes later, but it's slight.

The flavour here is extremely smoky, and has been pumped with a lot of different ingredients including tomato, garlic, onion, cayenne, coriander, aniseed, Coconut, cumin, oregano, parsley, paprika and of course chilli.

I'm still not massive fans of the dryness of Mackie's but overall i'm quite impressed with these. A real smoky Chilli with a lasting, intense flavour. Real warming flavour, great for our cold non-existent spring.

Real Crisps - Pepperoni

mmmm! I'm so impressed!

Real crisps have always done pretty well in my books, but i'm really loving their new flavour - Pepperoni.

First off it's a good crisp, good amount of crunch from a non oily potato but with a flavouring that isn't too dry.

The Pepperoni flavouring is perfect, you could easily crunching down on a really thin overdone pepperoni off an american pizza. Which is amazing considering these are vegatarian crisps!  A lot goes into the ingredients to make them what they are: Tomato, Paprika, Onion, Garlic, Parsley, Carrot, Oregano, Thyme, Fennel (you can't taste it don't worry), Cayenne, Liquorice, black pepper (lots of that).

Kettle Chips - Mozzarella & Pesto

Mmm! I've been wanting pesto crisps for a good while, everytime walkers asked for new flavour suggestions- pesto and chicken satay were on my list! (two different flavours not mixed :S)

Kettle chips are an awesome potato with a great crunch, the mozzarella and pesto are made from natural seasoning. They're a little greasy, but pesto is quite oil rich anyways. Mozzarella doesn't really have that much taste but the creamyness definitely comes through, basil pesto is amazing.
