Walkers - Chip Shop Chicken Curry

The last in the Walkers 'Do us a flavour' reviews and it's Emma G's Chip shop chicken curry.

An interestingly classy choice... and believe me it tastes as cheap as it sounds.

Not necessarily bad or disgusting.. but a little dull. It tastes the normal walkers chicken flavour (not great) mixed in with a bit of gravy and the slightest bit of curry flavouring. I mean slight. It really isn't far off chicken crisps.

Average.

Monster Munch - Sizzling Bacon

It's a special day in the Crisp Nation - as we introduce our new reviewer Stevo! He's gone old skool with his first review, dating back to the 80's with a review from nostalgia land...

Back in the 1980s, my school lunchbox was dominated by all the healthy things kids need to grow up; y’know, limp cheese and marmite sandwiches, a different chocolate biscuit everyday (Trio or Club anyone?) and invariably a packet of maize or corn snacks.

I’ve always been a sucker for vinegary flavours be it Salt and said Vinegar or Pickled Onion, with Monster Munch arguably the daddy of that flavour (although never rule out Space Raiders), but being the carnivore I am, meaty flavours do have their appeal and no meat flavour is better in my opinion than that of bacon. One of the finest examples of its time were the Sizzling Bacon Flavour Hunks of Monster Munch by Smith’s. Always offering a dilemma of a choice between them and the Pickled Onion variety, they never let me down and for some reason combined well with the post-swim smell of chlorine – or maybe that’s just nostalgia kicking in! Either way, when Walkers took over the brand and dispensed with Smokey Bacon (which is what I recall the flavour being named) it was a sad day in the history of crisps. Surpassed in the bacon stakes only by another of Smith’s bygone range, the Football Crazy, bacon Monster Munch truly were joy to eat.

Walkers Market Deli - Balsamic Vinegar of Modena

Hmmm, an interesting one from Walkers' new branch of Market Deli crisps. Balsamic vinegar, often well paired with salt as a fancy salt & vinegar..

in this case, it's just the vinegar and I'm not so sure I like it. It's definitely not dip-able and while it really is the flavour of balsamic - when would you really have balsamic on its own? Even when simply bread dipping - it really needs the olive oil and a tasty bread to make it what it is.

I have to say, they really have done well with the thickness and crunch of these crisps - top marks for that, but i'm pretty sour mouthed as a result of the flavour.

Walkers - Hot Dog with Tomato Ketchup

Another in the 'Do us a flavour' range from Walkers.

This time it's hot dog with tomato ketchup, as disgusting as that might sound to some, it's not actually that bad. If you like tomato flavoured crisps.. or prawn cocktail (that has nothing to do with prawns and everything to do with a sweet tomato flavouring) then you'll like these.

They're not that far off prawn cocktail if i'm honest, maybe a smidgen less sugar. These are suitable for vegetarians - so there really isn't any hot dog to do with them. Still, i'm not sure a sausage-y crisp would be that nice.. If they said these were ketchup flavour.. you would not be surprised.

Walkers - Sizzling Steak Fajita

Another of the 'Do us a flavour' range and I have to say MY BEST FLAVOUR YET!

This is the exact flavour of sizzling beef I'd want in my fajita. These are not veggy friendly and rightly so, the flavouring using Scotland's own Aberdeen Angus beef.. and it goes down a treat.

There's a very slight chilli to it, but more roasted, smokey paprika than a hard hitter- perfect for this flavour.

I'd be surprised if this doesn't top the list, good luck Jed!

Walkers Market Deli - Roasted Red Chilli with Mediterranean Sun dried Tomato Tortilla Chips

Well I have to say that Walkers bringing out a new range now has really shocked me, even if it is a subsidiary. To be run alongside the do us a flavour campaign seems strange!

I don't think I've seen any marketing related to this range, an interesting tack by the crisp market giants.

I'm actually quite impressed with these as it goes. The roasted chilli is deep without being too overpowering and the sun dried tomato is really tasty! The salt levels are pretty high as i'd expect from Walkers and the tortilla could be a little thicker but all in all - these are pretty tasty! They would be great dipped in sour cream. They off a chilli con carne without the carne type flavour.

Walkers - Cheesy Beans On Toast

Third up in the Do us a flavour range reviews..

And they've turned something amazing, simple and tasty into something overly cheap and vommy. I really thought they could do better than this, get some some sweet ketchup flavouring and add a bit of cheddar - what can go wrong?!

These are really sickly. Really can't stomach the whole pack I'm afraid.

Bad luck Emma C!

Walkers - Pulled Pork in a Sticky BBQ Sauce

14/8/2014

My second review for Walkers' DO US A FLAVOUR range.

This time it's ''Paul's''  Pulled pork in a sticky BBQ Sauce, and the first Walkers crisp I've seen for a long time that actually has meat in it!

***Not suitable for vegetarians***

It used to be that the only walkers flavour that was NOT vegetarian was cheese & onion (!!!) but that's changed now..

Still it's good to see they're using actual flavourings, they made an effort. Where they are lacking with these are the BBQ sauce... it's just a bit too cheap tasting.. less JD BBQ sauce and more a sickly supermarket basic version. It's a little bit sickly.. dissapointing as I quote like the sweetness of BBQ sauce, which couples nicely with some porky goodness.

So the first up in Walkers' new do us a flavour range, Robert's Ranch Raccoon. Ahhh that familiar raccoon flavour! I'm tasting beef steak mixed with cool original style sour cream.

Not too shabby actually. 7/10

I'll announce my favourite at the end of all the tastings!
