Ho Ho Ho! Merry Crispmas everyone!

Hope you had an excellent one this year and filled your boots with tasty crisps (there is always room for Twiglets at the end of play on Christmas day!)

Here's a little something Santa delivered this year from the weird and wonderful Japan...

That's right, it's a crisp grabber! For people who don't like to lick their fingers after a crisp eating session (who are these people?)

Pretty fun/ridiculous novelty, you can get them on ebay here.

Here's a few pics of me trying them out on Tangy Cheese Doritos at 5 o'clock on christmas morning (yes I know i'm a big kid)

D.P.Connolly & Sons - Farmhouse Cheese & Red Onion

Another welcome addition to the crispiverse.

They have a sweetness about them from the caramelised sugar, and tang about them from the paprika.

Because of this, they're not your standard cheese & onion. Sure the cheese is good and the onion is there, but the difference in flavour is not from that.

Impressed with D.P.Connolly, will be good to see what non-classic flavours they tackle in the future.

D.P.Connolly & Sons - Rock Salt & Malt Vinegar

Really impressed by these guys. They're new to the crisp scene after making a name for themselves in Juice & Jam. So I would have been a bit hesitant on tasting their first venture into crisps.

But these are great quality crisps, they've got a really nice crunch to them, quality on par with Kettle Chips which is really impressive for a newcomer.

The Salt and vinegar flavouring has been perfected are exactly what you want them to be, sour but not too sour vinegar with a sweet tang, and just the right amount of salt.

Mackie's - Haggis & Cracked Black Pepper

I'm going to start off by saying, I am a Haggis liker.  I do enjoy a wee haggis when in Scotland, but I can see why a lot of people would not like the idea of it.. they aren't the prettiest of meals (see image!)

But saying that, I think that Mackie's have created something everyone (who eats meat) will love here. I can't vouch for it's true haggis flavouring but it certainly had a porky taste. The adding of cracked black pepper is the big thing here. It gives the crisps a really nice tang.
I don't know if it's the pork flavouring that's done this, but I haven't found these crisps to be as dry as other Mackie's. But maybe it's all the saliva that rushes to your mouth when the pepper hits.

Anyway, it's a real good crisp. They give good crunch and a great tangy zing in the flavouring that keeps you coming back for more.

Definitely one to try.

Mackie's - Cherry Tomato & Herbs

Mackie's state their proudness of having such a dry texture on their crisps but personally - I feel that this is a massive flaw in their crisps. The fact that the pack is covered in a design looking very much some kind of chipboard does not help remove the thought that this is a very dry crisp.

They need some oil to let the seasoning wash around a bit, and it would give the crisp a lot better crunch than it currently has.

That rant over, I actually quite like the flavour. I'd expect a cherry tomato to have a sweeter taste than these, so it's more of a savoury affair with the herbs mixed in.

These would probably go down quite well with some sour cream dip or something to stop your mouth turning into a sawdust bin.

Mackie's - Crispy Bacon

First one up in the Mackie's (of Scotland) range is crispy bacon.

Not a bad effort. The crisp had a hard crunch and is incredibly flat (not sure how they did that with this year's curly potato crop?)

The bacon flavour is pretty smokey. I'd prefer them to be a bit sweeter if i'm honest. Not a bad bacon flavour by all means, but could definitely be improved by some sugar.

Pop Chips - Sea Salt & Vinegar

This is the last of the pop chips range and having done so blindingly well in all my reviews. I'm disappointed to see that they can get something wrong.

The vinegar is really really sour. It's not leaving a great taste in my mouth at all.
Also - for a range that has done salt content so well, these are pretty under-salted.

So the vinegar is overdone and very sour and there's not enough salt. These need to be worked on.

Looking back at the pop chips range. They've done surprisingly well. For a crisp that goes into the 'healthy' category... they have in fact done amazingly well. The crisp has a great texture to it and the flavours have been well executed. All of them leading to an addiction I can't relinquish. The original and barbecue being my favourites.

Pop Chips - Sour Cream & Onion

Another big thumbs up for pop chips.

These are full of flavour. Sour cream (not so sour) and onion are intense, and herbs are very clear in the pack (there are green specs all over the crisps).

One thing that pop chips have got right in their flavourings is salt content. You can really taste the salt here but it's not overpowering. Gives them a really moreish tone.
